Football season may be over but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped watching sports in my house. Now we’re on to basketball, with our eyes set on the playoffs in March. Game day food is one of my favorite things to make (good thing because I have to do it so often!) probably because most of it is bite-sized, and by now you have to know how I feel about bite-sized food.

Sliders are always a hit with my friends and family. They are stuffed full of meat and cheese, they are small enough to grab a couple for a quick bite between plays, and my personal favorite, you can make them ahead of time so you aren’t stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is having fun in the other room. Today’s slider recipe was inspired by my man’s love of Cuban sandwiches. They are his absolute favorite! Piled high with pork, ham, and cheese, a little mustard for flavor, and of course pickles. What’s not to love? When you get down to it I think he loves this sandwich so much because it has two kinds of pork, shredded pork, and ham. He swears it doesn’t get any better than that…well unless you added bacon…that might put it over the top!

Making the sliders was easy. I started with the bottom halves of my slider rolls in a casserole dish and spread a little mustard over them. The first layer of meat is the shredded pork. I baked 1 pound of pork and shredded it with my stand mixer just like I do for my buffalo chicken dip. Then I spread the pork over the bread. The next layer is ham. I used Oscar Mayer Selects Natural Applewood Smoked Ham. I love Oscar Mayer Selects Natural because there are no artificial preservatives (the back side of each package lists the ingredients used to preserve quality), no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no gluten and no by-products. It is the perfect choice for anyone looking for quality cold cuts that have no artificial ingredients and delicious taste. I used one whole package of the ham, layering the slices to cover the entire dish. Then I top it all with Swiss cheese. I chose Swiss because I think it goes really well with ham and I love how it melts. Once all of the layers are in place add the top layer of buns, a little butter, and in the oven they go.

After baking for 20 minutes you have ooey gooey, sliders that need one last thing…a pickle on top. I found these mini dill pickles and bamboo forks at the grocery store. Aren’t they so cute?! They were the perfect topper for my Cuban sliders!

These got my sweetie’s stamp of approval and he has already put in his request to have them again next weekend! I may never convince him to try another slider, LOL.
