We love a good mojito.

The lightly sweet flavor combined with a hint of lime and mint is the perfect compliment to some of my favorite Mexican inspired dishes.  We even have a virgin Strawberry Mojito Sparkling Water for those who prefer a mocktail.

Our blood orange version combines the traditional flavors of mint and rum with the sweet, tangy flavor of perfectly ripe blood oranges. They complement each other perfectly and the bold fruit makes a beautiful summer cocktail. If you were looking for a great way to spruce up your mojito this summer, then it’s time to try these.

If you love a good summer cocktail as much as we do make sure to give our summer moscato sangria and frozen mango margarita a try too!

What is a Mojito?

Mojitos are a Cuban cocktail that combine sweetness with citrus flavors and rum. It is traditionally made with white rum, sugar, lime juice, soda water, and mint.

Mojitos are a refreshing and delicious cocktail that are perfect for anyone who likes refreshing and slightly sweet drinks. Our recipe takes the familiar mojito and mixes some sweet blood orange juice into the mix. And it’s as delicious as it sounds.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need for these:

  • Sprigs of mint – You will definitely want to use fresh mint for this.
  • Juices – You’ll need the juice from a fresh blood orange and lime.
  • Light rum – You can use your favorite variety.
  • Ice
  • Club soda – This adds sparkle and a little fizz to the drink.
  • Simple syrup – You’ll need both sugar and water for the simple syrup.

Instructions

You’ll need to make both a simple syrup and then the cocktail. If you don’t have simple syrup premade, we recommend making that first to give it a chance to cool.

To make the simple syrup, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Simmer the water and sugar. In a small or medium pot, bring the sugar and water to a simmer. Allow it to simmer for 5 minutes.

Step 2 – Allow the syrup to cool. Remove the syrup from heat and allow it to cool. You can store it for up to 1 week in the fridge in a covered container.

To make the mojito, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Combine the liquids. Pour the blood orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup into a glass.

Step 2 – Muddle the mint. Once the juices and syrup are combined, muddle the mint leaves with a muddler.

Step 3 – Bring it together. Finally, pour the light rum into the glass, add the ice, and fill the glass the rest of the way with club soda and then garnish with blood orange slices and mint.

Blood oranges and a little mint make this Blood Orange Mojito beautiful and delicious. I’ll be enjoying this easy mojito recipe all summer long. I might even try something different and make this my Cinco de Mayo drink!

What is Simple Syrup?

Simple syrup is a combination of water and sugar. You use simple syrups in cocktails and other speciality drinks that need a bit of sugar to sweeten them up.

Simple syrups allow granulated sugar to dissolve easily. It also allows you to avoid the problem of sugar sinking to the bottom of the drink and creating a gritty texture.

To make simple syrup, you need to bring the sugar and water to simmer, stirring occasionally. Allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes and then remove from heat. Allow the syrup to cool before using in the cocktail.

What Kind of Rum is Best for Mojitos?

Without question, the best rums for mojitos are light and refreshing options. There are several brands that sell lighter rums. Some of our favorites include:

  • Cruzan light rum
  • Bacardi silver rum
  • 10 Cane Rum
  • Havana Club Anejo Blanco Puerto Rican Rum
  • Ron Matusalem Platino

How to Muddle Mint Leaves Without a Muddler

A good muddler is a great addition to any kitchen. They are a must if you make cocktails regularly.

But if you only mix drinks from time to time, you may not have one on hand. One of the easiest ways to muddle mint without a muddler is to use a glass and wooden spoon. Use the handle of the spoon to press the mint leaves into the bottom and sides of the glass
