Spring is officially here! Did you know that April is Earth Month and April 22nd is Earth Day? My kids are super excited about it and they have already started asking me about making their eggshell herb gardens this year. They love this simple Earth Day tradition so much! I started it back when my son was three. I wanted something to keep him busy during spring break and I kept seeing these eggshell herb gardens on Pinterest. They seemed like a great way to learn a little about plants and how they grow and to talk about recycling and composting. Plus I had everything I needed already, except for the seeds packets and I was able to grab them at Target. Now my son is 6 and my daughter is 4 and they both look forward to planting their seeds during Earth Month and waiting for them to start sprouting.

Completely biodegradable and earth-friendly. A great kid activity for Earth Day! I like to set up a table outside in the sunshine, lay out all the supplies they need and let the kids go to town. They love getting to do it all by themselves. They start with empty eggshells that have been rinsed out. I usually do these a few days in advance so they are clean and dry when the kids go to use them. The kids fill the eggshells halfway with soil, place a pinch of seeds in each eggshell and then top them off with a little more soil so they are about ¾ quarters of the way full.  We wipe off the excess soil and put them back in the carton (with the lid torn off) and then each eggshell gets a soda cap full of water to get the seeds started. That’s all you have to do!

With a bag full of potting soil and a bunch of eggshells things are bound to get a little messy. My kiddos are pretty good about cleaning up. I pass out the wipes and spray down the table and in the end we get the job done. Green Works products are a cleaning staple in my house. The wipes are 99% naturally derived and the spray is 98% naturally derived so I feel comfortable letting my kids use them to help clean up messes around the house. They’re also great at cutting through grease, grime and dirt without leaving behind any harmful chemical residue. The wipes are even compostable which seems extra appropriate for cleaning up a project during Earth Month!

Completely biodegradable and earth-friendly. A great kid activity for Earth Day! It takes about two weeks for the seeds to sprout and it becomes our morning routine to water them and peek into the eggs looking for the first little sprouts to emerge. You should hear the excitement in the house on the  morning they come down and see green leaves poking up out of the dirt! It’s really a great way for kids to get involved with Earth Day and I hope they stay this excited about it for years to come.
