A few months ago I ordered a personalized vinyl cut-out of my last name and a family quote when I spotted it on Etsy. The store I purchased it from is no longer selling them but there are tons of Etsy stores that will cut personalized vinyl wording for you, just do a quick search. Or, you could buy a Silhouette Cameo and be able to cut your own vinyl (and a million other things!) whenever you want. I have one now and I love it for doing projects like this.
Once I had my vinyl wording I had to figure out what I was going to do with it. My house is decorated in a modern rustic style with lots of barn wood so I decided I would check out Home Depot and see what I could find. Did you know that Home Depot has a scrap wood section? It’s where they put the scrap pieces of wood after customers have had a piece cut. I find the best deals there for little projects like this. The day I went in I came across a lovely weathered gray piece that was perfect for the reclaimed-wood/rustic look I was going for. I actually got two pieces since I have another project idea I’m working on, and it only cost me $2! I love a good deal :).
At home I laid out the piece of wood and placed vinyl on top and centered using a measuring tape. I marked the corners of the decal with a pencil to make sure I kept it centered when I was applying it. Using a plastic putty knife I smoothed the decal and made sure to get any bubbles out. Across the name I just centered the quote “All because two people fell in love”, again smoothing with the putty knife. Then I slowly peeled back the paper backing and my sign was complete.
That’s it folks, it was that simple! All those cute vinyl signs you see everywhere are that easy to make. Just find yourself a decal and something to stick it on and go for it! This project took me less than 15 minutes (not counting the trip to Home Depot) and I absolutely love it. For now I’d put it on my mantel but I’m thinking I may do a gallery wall of pictures over my couch and have this in the center. What do you think?
