Grilled California Club Sandwich – National Grilled Cheese Month!
This Grilled California Club Sandwich oozes Munster cheese, and is piled high with ham, turkey, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, and sprouts. It is the perfect way to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Month and we’re partnering with Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread to build the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich!
Did you guys know that April is National Grilled Cheese Month? Me either…but now that I do I am all over it because grilled cheese sandwiches are amazing. Ooey, gooey cheese, sandwiched between slices of buttered bread that have been grilled to perfection….it doesn’t get much better than that. Grilled cheese is totally a comfort food for me. When I’m sick, or just need a little pick me up a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich are my go to.
I’m not going to lie, I’m kind of a snob about my grilled cheese. Not just any bread can be grilled up into the perfect cheesy sandwich. I like a nice thick piece of bread, that is still soft like sandwich bread should be. In celebration of National Grilled Cheese Month Sara Lee® Bread is introducing their new Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread. This bread is exactly what you need to take your grilled cheese from pretty good, to OMG! I like an ooey gooey grilled cheese and the thick Italian slices are able to hold up under the weight of all that cheese and with a little butter it gets nice and crispy on the outside while staying soft and fluffy on the inside. Bonus, it is made without artificial flavors, colors or high fructose corn syrup giving it a true homemade taste.
I think we can all agree that National Grilled Cheese Month calls for something a little more than just your every day grilled cheese. Am I right? Melinda and I took that challenge and made what may very well be the best grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever eaten. I give you the Grilled California Club. This sandwich is a triple decker club sandwich made with Munster cheese, ham, turkey, bacon, avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, sprouts, and mayonnaise.
We started with three slices of Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread. The first piece we buttered on both sides and then we toasted it in a skillet over medium high heat, flipping halfway through to get both sides golden brown. Then we buttered the remaining two pieces on one side and on the non-buttered side of each we added two slices of Munster cheese, and on one turkey, and the other ham. So basically we had an open-face turkey grilled cheese and an open-face ham grilled cheese. We put both halves in the skillet and cooked them until the cheese was melted and the bread was beautifully crisp and golden.
Then it was just a matter of assembly. The turkey grilled cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Then the middle piece of bread (the one with no cheese) with mayonnaise on both sides, avocado, bacon, sprouts, and top it off with the ham grilled cheese. The Sara Lee® Artesano™ Bread is so thick that you can barely get your mouth around this sandwich, but once you do I promise you it won’t last long. It is soooo good!

Thanks for catching that! It is 4 slices of Munster cheese.
Love the look of this sandwich. Does anyone know where to get fresh Alfalfa Sprouts? I have tried Whole Foods, Central Market and Sprouts. They all tell me they dont carry them because of some Salmonella Muenchen outbreak in 2011. Iam like it is 2016, come on. If anyone knows, please email me
