These Inside Out Apples are a fun way to serve a simple dessert that is a little sour and a little sweet.
Have you seen Disney’s Inside Out yet? We went to see it last weekend and the kids and I loved it! It was funny, and a little sad in places, but it had a great message about family and how feelings can be a mix of happy and sad and that’s okay. My son is 5 years old, and my daughter is 2 1/2 years old going on 15, so some days my house is a roller coaster of emotions. They love each other, they are mad at each other, someone is crying, then they are laughing. I swear, after seeing the movie, now I can picture Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear (from the movie) fighting over the controls in the kids’ heads!
I used Inside Out as a way to start a conversation with my kids about their feelings and how they can express them in a healthy, positive way. Of course snacks were included! I made these Inside Out Apples with the kids using tart Granny Smith apples and sweet marshmallow fluff and cream cheese. I cut each apple in half and used a melon baller to scoop out the inside. The kids helped me make the filling, mixing marshmallow fluff and cream cheese together in a bowl, and we talked about sweet things, and what feelings they thought of when they thought of sweet. Then I diced up the inside of the Granny Smith apples and each of them took a bite and we talked about sour tastes and grumpy, or angry, feelings. I added the apple pieces to the marshmallow mixture and my son stirred everything together.
Once the filling was made I scooped it back into each apple and drizzled them with caramel. The fluff was delicious, a nice blend of sour apple and sweet marshmallow, and the crunch of the apples mixed into the filling was perfect. We ate it with a spoon and finished off the apple halves when they were empty.
The fun didn’t stop there though. I had a surprise for the kids. Early in the week I found the new Walmart exclusive Inside Out plush toys and bought some of the characters, along with the new Kellogg’s Inside Out fruit snacks. The kids were so excited and we spent some time role playing different emotions and how they act when they have that feeling. It was really a great way to open up communication between the kids and I. My 5 year old had questions and really got into acting out his feelings, and my two year old worked on associating the word for an emotion (happy, sad, angry, scared, etc.) with my son’s faces. I know it sounds like such a heavy topic but we really had a lot of fun doing it. I never cease to be amazed at how quickly they are growing and how much they already know, or have questions about. I’m so glad I used this opportunity to start a conversation.
The plush toys really were a big help in getting the kids to open up and have fun talking about their feelings. If you want to start a conversation, or you just loved the movie, you can find them in the toy aisle at Walmart.

How do you get your kids to talk about their feelings? Give me your tips!
My son actually goes to a therapist…it started out for behavior but she sees that he needs to verbalize his feelings. So we are working on that!
This is so cute and looks to be amazingly delicious. I do love a great presentation, not to mention tasty salad. Thanks, I’ll be trying this. I found you on Foodie Friday.

Hi, Melinda ~ I’m visiting from the Share Your Creativity Link Party. These apples look so yummy! During the school year I try to make after-school snacks for my kids, and these are going on my list of recipes. I think they’ll love them! My kids are older, but they like to talk, so that helps. But sometimes I have to ask a few leading questions to help them get a hold on what they’re feeling and why. BTW, we’re SO excited to see Inside Out. :0) Thanks for sharing! Have a great week!
