Last week I was my birthday. Turning 29 for the 10th time wasn’t so bad ;). My wonderful friends and family made it a special day for me with all of their sweet birthday wishes on Facebook and Melinda made me an awesome Funfetti Oreo Icebox Cake and gave it to me on a beautiful DIY cake stand that she made herself. Homemade whipped cream and birthday cake flavored Oreos, obviously it was delicious! My guy took me out to dinner at a new-to-us restaurant and surprised me with a new toy, the Kitchen Aid Ice Cream Maker attachment for my Kitchen Aid stand mixer!! I hope you guys are ready for ice cream recipes because they are coming! In June Melinda shared a few things she just can’t live without to celebrate her birthday and I decided to take a page from her and take today to share some of my favorite things.
Let’s start with my Le Creuset French Oven. It isn’t cheap but it is totally worth the cost. I use this at least once a week. I cook whole chickens in it. I braise short ribs, I make awesome one pot meals. This French oven does it all. It can go from the stovetop straight into the oven and the cast iron heats everything.
When I’m not using m French oven I’m using my Le Creuset skillet. It is cast iron so it heats evenly and the interior is matte-enamel so it doesn’t require seasoning.
Whether I’m cooking or baking I use my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer for everything. I mash potatoes in it, knead homemade pizza dough, and mix up awesome cakes. It is priceless and one of the best birthday gifts I ever received! It has so many cool attachments like the Kitchen Aid Pasta Roller and Cutter and my new Kitchen Aid Ice Cream Maker!
I used my Joseph Joseph Adjustable Rolling Pin any time I need to roll dough out. It has rings on the ends that let you choose how thick you want the dough to be and takes all of the guess work out of getting your dough just the right thickness. My cookies and pie crusts cook perfectly now! I love this so much I’ve given it as a gift to several friends. It’s a must have for any baker.
If you’re going to make food you have to serve it on something. I’ve had this white Beaded Dinnerware for a few years now and I love how simple it is. I also use these matching beaded ramekins all the time. I bake in them, I prep recipes with them, and they are perfect for holding topping for a make-your-own chili bar!
I’m not always cooking and baking. When I find a few minutes to myself I love to read. My Kindle is always loaded with one of my favorite books. What am I reading these days? I’m glad you asked ;). I’m a Scifi/Fantasy kind of girl (thanks dad!) so some of my current favorites are the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, The Hollow series by Kim Harrison, and the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews.
I spend a lot of time in the car driving back and forth from work so I also listen to audio books every day. Audible is pretty much the best thing ever for those of us who love to read but don’t always have the time to sit down with a book. I love that I can add the audio version on to a Kindle book I’m reading and switch back and forth between reading and listening. I never would have had time to read all of the Game of Thrones books without it! If you haven’t tried it take advantage of the free trial and check it out!
When you’re reading and listening to books all the time you can never have enough power. This external battery is a lifesaver. I carry it with me everywhere and I never have to worry about running out of juice before the day is over. I took it camping with me this summer and it kept my phone charged the whole time.
That’s it. My list of things that I love. Now you have a good idea of what to get my for my birthday next year. 😉 What are some things you can’t live without? Let me know in the comments so I can add them to my wishlist!
