How to Make Simple Yarn Pom Poms
Yarn Pom Poms are a simple craft project that is also absolutely adorable!
For our game day party we put our cupcakes on a tiered stand and topped them with yarn pom poms to create our cheering crowd. Today we’re going to show you how simple it is make to make yarn pom poms and I’m warning you, you’re going to want to put them everywhere. They are so cute and there are so many fun decorations you can make with them!Start with your form, which is really just a rectangular piece of cardboard cut to the size you need. The height of the rectangle is what will dictate how large your pom pom is. Ours was about two and a half tall. You can use multiple colors or just one, whatever works for you. We did multiple colors since we wanted them to match our “teams” and to make them look more like a cheerleader’s pom poms. Wrap the yarn around the form until it is pretty thick. The thicker the yarn the fuller your pom pom will be.
Then gently pull the yarn off of the form. Lay it on a single string of yarn with the string cutting across the yarn horizontally.
Tie the string around the ball of yarn very tightly. This will leave both ends of the yarn ball as loops.
Now using your scissors cut the loops apart. The string you tied around the middle will be the very center of your pom pom. When all of the loops are cut fluff them out until both sides come together and it looks round. You may have to do a little trimming to make it more symmetric.
That’s it! Now you have an adorable little pom pom. We hot glued ours to a lollipop stick for the cupcake toppers and also threaded them on a long piece of yarn for a garland. I am in love with them! They made such a cute addition to our table and I can imagine so many other crafty things to do with them.
