Personalized Adoption Printable Gift

Last Saturday we went to a “Homecoming Adoption” party for our friends Nelson and Joelma.  They have been attempting to adopt for the past several years and have had their hearts  broken more than once.  Two weeks ago I was surprised to receive this email:

“Last month we were approved to travel to Ukraine.  We decided to quietly travel on April 13th despite the political instability of the country.  We did not know if any children would be a good match for us, and we learned from experience to guard our hearts and expectations in case we come home with nothing.  We didn’t tell our family or friends because the trip was a long shot and we didn’t want added pressure and possible disappointment.  Ukraine requires 6-8 weeks in country before custody is 100% permanent and we couldn’t bear to update everyone at every nail-biting baby step towards completion.
We are thrilled to report that we met and fell in love with a 4.5 year old boy named Daniel from the eastern city of Kharkiv.”

I was so excited for them! I knew I wanted to make something special that marked their new beginning as a family.  Kat made a printable with the outline of Maryland and Ukraine with hearts on the city where each are from.  The hearts are connected by a dotted line that symbolizes their journey to become a family. I printed it out on cardstock and cut it down to size.

Instead of a traditional mat I wanted to do something different so I removed the mat from the frame and used a piece of burlap as the background. I used glue dots to secure the printable to the burlap. To give them another option I made sure that the printable was cut so it would still work if the mat was used and during the party we had the guests sign the mat. They can choose to put the mat back in (covering the burlap) or remove it and have the burlap as the background. I think it turned out great.  It’s amazing how something so simple has such an impact when it’s all put together.

Together they make a family!

Congratulations to the Columbano family on their new beginning.
