Ingredients You’ll Need
- Slider rolls – Hawaiian sweet rolls are a go-to for all of the best slider recipes, but if you can’t find those any slider size buns will work.
- Thinly sliced steak –
- Seasoning – Kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder are all you need to give a great flavor to your steak.
- Green pepper – Green bell peppers are a must! We like to do a mix of green and red bell peppers on our Chicken cheesesteak sliders.
- Onion, diced
- Provolone cheese – We like our steak and cheese sliders with slices of provolone cheese on top, but if you want to do it the authentic Philly way you’ll want to pour some Cheez Whiz on top!
- Mayonnaise – I love a little mayo on my cheesesteak slider. Spread a thin layer on the top and bottom bun.
- Butter – This is melted and brushed over the bread to give it a delicious, toasted flavor.
- Onion – Finely mince some fresh onion, preferably yellow onion or white onion, and add it to the melted butter.
How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
Step 1 – Prepare oven. Preheat oven to 305 degrees F.
Step 2 – Prepare the bread. Separate the tops and bottoms of your rolls and place the bottoms in an 11″ x 7″ baking dish or on a baking sheet. Prep the bread by spreading a thin layer of mayo on the tops and bottoms of the rolls.
Step 3 – Cook the steak. Cook the steak meat in a skillet, adding salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. When done cooking drain off any excess liquid and set aside.
Step 4 – Cook the veggies. Saute the pepper and onions until they are tender. Drain off any excess liquid and set aside.
Step 5 – Layer 1. When the meat, onions and green peppers have finished cooking spread the steak, then peppers, and onions evenly over the bottom pieces of bread.
Step 6 – Layer 2. Place a layer of provolone cheese over the peppers and onions.
Step 7 – Layer 3. Place the top pieces of bread on top of the cheese.
Step 8 – Topping. In a small bowl combine melted butter and 1 tablespoon of finely diced raw onions. Then brush the tops of the bread with the butter mixture.
Note: If you want to kick the flavor up a notch you can also add a 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder to the melted butter mixture.
Step 9 – Bake. Cover with foil and bake for 10 minutes, then remove foil and continue baking for another 10 minutes (or until cheese is melted).
Step 10 – Serve. Cut and serve hot. When they come out of the oven use a knife to cut between the top pieces of bread and you have Philly Cheese Steak Sliders for everyone! All of the flavor from the meat and peppers soaks into that soft sweet bread, and the cheese is all melted and gooey. I’m telling you now, make two batches because these things are going to go fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Traditionally Philly cheesesteaks use thinly sliced ribeye steak but you can also use skirt steak, or New York strip. My grocery store carries thinly sliced steak in the meat section right next to the ground beef.
If your grocery store doesn’t carry thinly sliced steak in the meat section you can ask your butcher to thinly slice it for you or you can buy your cut of meat, bring it home and place it in the freezer for about 1 hour. This firms up the meat and makes it easier to thinly slice the steak yourself. Don’t let the meat freeze completely!
You can also find pre-packaged thinly sliced steak, such as Steak-Ums, in the freezer section.
If you find that your top buns are getting brown faster than the sliders are heating up you can leave them covered in foil for the entire cook time. This will keep the bread from burning on to.
Sort of…I wouldn’t recommend assembling and baking ahead of time however you can cook your meat, onions, and peppers the day before and store in the refrigerator.
When you are ready to bake the sliders first heat the meat and veggies in the microwave so they are slightly warm (just 2-3 minutes should do) and then assemble the sliders and bake according to the instructions.

Sorry for a dumb question, but do you defrost the beef before cooking it? I’ve never seen “thinly sliced steak” in the frozen foods section. What other foods might be by it?

Hi Joyce, the well known brand of thin frozen steak is called Steak Umm here on the east coast. If you happen to find it, you do not need defrost it. It is so thin that it cooks super fast. You can use fresh thin steak meat also.

At shoprite they also sell beef shaved steak as well to give that great steak taste of you cant find/aren’t a fan of steakum!! However I too am on the east coast so ask your local grocer!!

What size box of steak? 6 or 14?

Do you have to use mayo? Can anything be substituted for it?
You can definitely skip the mayo if you prefer. I don’t think you need to substitute it with anything.
Can I use thin sliced deli roast beef???
I think that would work. It might taste slightly different than steak but I’m sure it will be delicious!
Dumb question… What would be the best way to transport this? Assemble everything at the party place? Or will it keep okay to be transported after baking? I just don’t want it to get soggy!
If it’s an option to bake it at the party I think that is always the best way. I would put the rolls in a casserole dish, add everything but the cooked peppers and onions. Then add those when you get to the party and pop them in the oven. They are always best when they are warm.

I would reheat them in the oven so they don’t get soggy when you reheat. I would do 350F for 10 mins or so.

I used a round bottom steak & sliced it thin. I also put minced garlic instead of onions on top of the bread. Seasoned my meat with Tony’s, salt & pepper & garlic powder. Turned out phenomenal

Aldi’s has a wonderful thin beef shaved steak I use for tacos, quesadillas and I think would be great on these sandwiches. I always keep an extra in my freezer. It is not frozen when you buy it. All meat no fillers and the brand is Old Neighborhood.
