There are few things that I love more than salsa. I love all the different ways you can make it from traditional pico de gallo or 5 minute restaurant style salsa, to a sweet fruit salsa served with cinnamon chips, or tropical pineapple salsa with tajin.

This fresh mango salsa with avocado meets somewhere in the middle turning fresh fruit into a sweet and savory salsa that is perfect for Cinco de Mayo or summer cookouts.

Eating healthy is so much easier when the food tastes incredible, and that is precisely what you are going to get with this mango pico de gallo. The texture is excellent, and you get the perfect combination of flavor in each and every bite. It’s sweet, creamy, tangy, and unforgettable.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Mango – Fresh mango is best but if you can’t find it in your area you can use frozen cubed mango. You’ll just need to thaw it completely before using.
  • Avocado – Perfectly ripe avocado adds a delicious creamy texture to this fruit salsa.
  • Red Onion – I highly recommend using red onion for this recipe but if you need to substitute the next best choice is a sweet onion.
  • Cilantro – Fresh cilantro adds a beautiful flavor to the salsa. If you’re one of those people who can’t stand the taste of cilantro don’t substitute anything for this just skip it.
  • Lime Juice – Lime juice brightens up the flavor of any salsa. Salt – Don’t skip the salt, it’s what brings out the flavor of the dish!

How to Make Mango Salsa

Step 1 – Combine. Put all ingredients in a bowl and toss gently.

That’s it! I told you that this salsa is super easy to make! You can make it in a matter of minutes, and honestly, it’s probably going to disappear that quickly too!

Salsa Variations

If you want to add in some additional ingredients to make this salsa your own you absolutely can! It’s your creation now, and you can quickly and easily adjust the flavors to meet your desires. I love the way it is and can eat it with a spoon, but sometimes I like to toss in a little bit of this or that! Take a look at some of these ideas:

  • Jalapeno – If you are into things that are spicy, adding some fresh chopped jalapeno is a fantastic way to do that. You can add one or two jalapenos depending on how hot you want it. But the heat and the sweet go wonderful together.
  • Pineapple – What goes better with mango than pineapple? Nothing! They are both tropical and fun fruits that are irresistible together. Chop up some fresh pineapple and add it to the salsa for even more natural sweetness. Check out our recipe for pineapple salsa with Tajin!
  • Red Bell Pepper – Making salsa that has lots of vibrant colors and flavors is easy, especially when you add in some red bell pepper. It gives you a pop of bright red. Red peppers are sweeter than other varieties, so it’s a great choice.
  • Cucumber – Chop up a cucumber or English cucumber and add to the salsa. It’s best if your try to remove the seeds before adding them. I love how light the cucumbers are!
  • Garlic – Call me crazy, but I think almost everything tastes better with a little bit of garlic. Don’t go too wild or anything, just a teaspoon or two is enough to give you some garlicky flavor.
  • Peaches – I saved the best idea for last because peaches are so good with this mango salsa. Try it and see for yourself, and I am betting you will enjoy every bite.

How To Pick A Ripe Mango

Let’s face it, going to the market, and picking fruit can be a pain sometimes. Those days you get super excited to make a recipe only to taste it and find out that one ingredient wasn’t ripe or even worse, too ripe! We have all been there, and I wanted to take a second to help you pick out the best mangos every time.

First, it’s a good idea to hold the fruit in your hand. You should be able to give it a very light squeeze, and it should be soft and give just a bit. If it’s hard or too soft, skip that one and head on to find the next one.

Another great indicator of fresh mango is the smell. I know you may feel strange picking up a bunch of fruit and sniffing it, but it truly gives you the best idea of what you are getting into. When the mango is ripe, you will notice that it smells very sweet and delicious. If you don’t notice any kind of smell at all, then that isn’t ripe yet. If it’s overly ripe, it will probably smell between really sweet and almost sour at the same time.

Can You Freeze Mango Salsa?

Yes! Keep it in a freezer bag or container that is airtight. The salsa will last around 3 months in the freezer. Thaw it in the refrigerator and if you want to add some more mango right before serving.

How Long Does Salsa With Mango Last in the Fridge?

Mango avocado salsa will last 1-2 days in the fridge. You should always keep it airtight and use a tight-fitting lid. If you don’t add the avocado until when you are ready to serve it, it will last around 3 days. The avocado will turn brown, and that is totally normal. The lime juice will help with this, so don’t skip it! You can still eat brown avocado, but it just doesn’t look good.

What to Serve with Mango Avocado Salad?

You guys! This simple salsa is seriously so good; I can eat it all by itself. But that’s our little secret. You can serve this salsa any way that you like. Just like traditional salsa recipes, it goes well with chips. If you are trying to steer clear of foods that are processed, you can always use bell pepper pieces in place of tortilla chips.

We love to put it on fish dishes like salmon. The flavors are hard to resist, and it looks gorgeous too. It’s also lovely in tacos like fish tacos or shrimp tacos.

Grilled chicken topped with this salsa is out of this world amazing too. We even made it into Mango Chicken Salad.

Serve it alongside a delicious frozen mango margarita and you’ve got the perfect meal!

That’s what I love about this recipe; it goes with so many other dishes!
