What Ingredients are in Creamed Corn?

  • Salted Butter – Salted butter gives the corn a little extra boost of flavor.
  • Yellow Onion – We suggest yellow onion, or sweet onions, as they blend really well with the sweetness of the corn.
  • Milk – You can use skim, 1%, 2%, or whole milk.
  • Flour – All-purpose flour is all you’ll need to help thicken the creamed corn.
  • Corn – You can use frozen, canned, or fresh corn for this recipe. If you use fresh corn you’ll need to cut the kernels from the cob. We suggest using a spoon to scrape the cob after the kernels are removed to get all of the sweet juices from the cob. It will add extra flavor to the dish.
  • Seasonings – A little salt and pepper are all you need.
  • Heavy Cream – This adds a rich, creaminess to the final dish. Do not substitute with milk or half and half you want full cream for the best results.

How to Store It

Storing creamed corn properly is essential to maintain its quality and safety. Here are steps on how to store creamed corn:

Refrigerating Creamed Corn:

  1. Cool It Down: Allow the creamed corn to cool to room temperature before refrigerating it. Hot food can raise the temperature inside your fridge, potentially affecting other items.
  2. Use Airtight Containers: Transfer the creamed corn into airtight containers. Airtight containers help prevent moisture loss and the absorption of odors from other foods in the fridge.
  3. Label and Date: It’s a good practice to label the container with the date you made the creamed corn. This helps you keep track of its freshness.
  4. Refrigerate: Place the airtight container in the refrigerator. Creamed corn can typically be stored in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Freezing Creamed Corn:

If you want to store creamed corn for a longer period, consider freezing it:

  1. Cool It Down: Allow the creamed corn to cool to room temperature as with refrigeration.
  2. Portion and Package: Divide the creamed corn into smaller portions, which are easier to thaw and use. You can use freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags.
  3. Remove Air: If using freezer bags, remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. If using containers, make sure they are airtight.
  4. Label and Date: Label each package with the date so you can keep track of how long it’s been in the freezer.
  5. Freeze: Place the portions in the freezer. Creamed corn can be stored in the freezer for around 2-3 months. It’s important not to exceed this time frame to maintain optimal quality.

Thawing and Reheating:

When you’re ready to use your refrigerated or frozen creamed corn:

  • For refrigerated creamed corn, simply reheat it on the stovetop or in the microwave until it’s hot.
  • For frozen creamed corn, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, reheat it on the stovetop or in the microwave.

Remember to use safe food handling practices, and if you ever notice any signs of spoilage, such as an off smell or unusual texture, it’s best to discard the creamed corn to ensure your safety and the quality of your dishes. Proper storage and reheating will help you enjoy your creamed corn while preserving its delicious flavor and texture.
