Items Needed:

  • wood block
  • paint
  • paint brush or paint sponge
  • Mod Podge
  • card stock
  • pictures

First determine the size of your wood block.  I went to Home Depot and found a 4″ x 4″ scrap piece of wood. I had them cut it to the size I needed.  If you’d rather just order blocks, I would suggest Woodworks Ltd. I have ordered from them before and are very good quality, have the best price and ship quickly. I was thinking ahead this year so I made sure I was actually in some of the pictures taken at Easter. That’s the problem with being the family photographer, you never have any pictures with you in them! I also found a “super Mom” quote from Mother Letters. You will need to resize all of your images to the size of your block (4″x4″ in this case), then print them on plain white card stock.  Do not use regular copy paper, it wrinkles when you Mod Podge it to the block.

Next you’ll want to paint your block. Don’t stress on painting it completely, the majority of it is going to be covered with your photos.  While your block is drying, start preparing your pictures.  I like the torn look for the edges of my photos but you can just cut them out if you prefer. To tear them fold the paper around the edges of your picture, make a nice deep crease, then tear gently.  By now your block should be dry, and you are ready to Mod Podge. With a clean brush, spread a thin layer of Mod Podge on one of the block’s sides, also apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the back of the picture.  Now center the picture on the block and press gently, smoothing out any wrinkles.  Once your picture is placed where you want it, paint a thin layer of Mod Podge all over the picture, making sure to cover the exposed edges of the block too.  Don’t worry about brush strokes, it will dry smooth and clear. Repeat for each picture and your quote. This project from start to finish probably took me about an hour.

I personally love photo blocks and have several of them (all different sizes) throughout my home.  I also have made them for family and friends.  It is an easy way to personalize a gift for anyone.  It makes a great gift for those upcoming holidays involving Moms, Dads, and teachers!
