Ingredients You’ll Need
A ham and cheese bake only requires a few simple ingredients. Toss it all together and bake for a delicious breakfast casserole!
- English Muffins – I use regular English muffins but you could use whole wheat if you prefer.
- Ham – You can use leftover ham, ham steak, or cubed ham from the grocery store. We cut ours into cubes, but you can just chop it up into bite-size pieces. No precision required!
- Cheddar Cheese – Shredded cheddar cheese goes perfectly with eggs and ham!
- Eggs – The eggs bring the whole dish together, literally. The eggs in this dish bake around all of the ingredients so you can cut and serve.
- Heavy Cream – Heavy cream, or whipping cream, adds a little extra creaminess to the casserole. You can substitute with milk if needed.
- Salt and Pepper – A little sprinkle brings out the flavor in the dish.
How to Make a Ham Egg and Cheese Bake
Step 1 – Prepare oven and baking dish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13×9 inch casserole dish.
Step 2 – Cut bread. Cut the English muffins into 1 inch cubes.
Step 3 – Layer casserole. Add half of the English Muffin cubes to the casserole dish. Sprinkle with half of the cheese and half of the ham cubes. Repeat with another layer of English muffin, ham, and cheese.
Step 4 – Make eggs. In a bowl combine eggs, heavy cream, salt, and pepper. Whisk until thoroughly combined.
Step 5 – Put it all together. Pour the egg mixture over the casserole making sure to cover all of it.
Step 6 – Bake. Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and place in the oven to bake for 45 minutes. Then remove foil and continue to bake for 15 minutes.
Step 7 – Cool and serve. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
How to Make Ahead of Time
This make ahead breakfast casserole is perfect for the holidays because you just throw all of the ingredients together and then pop it in the oven. There isn’t a lot of prep work and what little cutting you need to do can be done the night before.
Assemble the ham, cheese, and English muffins together in a casserole dish before going to bed and in the morning you whip the eggs and cream together and pour it over everything in the dish and it’s ready to bake.
Super easy great for Christmas morning or New Year’s Day when you want to serve something nice but don’t want to wake up at the crack of dawn to do it.

It is so nice to make things easier on ourselves especially during any kind of holiday. Now we have Easter coming up and using something to make our clean-up is easier I’m all for. The Chinet plates look a little fancier than just the plain paper plates. And your egg casserole would be great for an Easter Brunch.
I love breakfast casseroles, but haven’t used English muffins for them! Great idea, with the nice chewy crust!

Yes, I would cook it first but I think that would be delicious!
Do you use 4 muffins, counting top and bottom as 2 or a whole muffin as 1 count?
8 muffins. Top and bottom make 1 muffin.
A coworker told me she made this breakfast casserole for Easter brunch. I had some extra ham left over from Easter dinner. I said, this is a great recipe to try out for breakfast for my wife and bonus sons aka stepsons. They love egg bakes. Made it up in twenty minutes and putting it in the oven. Not even going to waist for breakfast they will eat it for dinner. Thanks for sharing. Looks like a wonderful dish..

I hope you enjoyed it!
Very good recipe, thank you. I need your advice, how much is a high-calorie meal? And then I am engaged in the hall, because I have problems with excess weight, which I try to solve. And my fitness trainer stopped me eating more 2-2.5k calories a day. I know that it is not exactly possible to say how many calories there are, but can you approximately calculate? The recipe is really delicious, I can not tear myself away from this muffin!
Hi John, we have updated the recipe with the calories. I’m so glad you are enjoying it!
This is a great post thanks for the information!
when you call for 8 muffins does that include top and bottom?
Yes. You don’t cut them in half you just chop the entire muffin into pieces.
Delicious meal. Keep up the good work.
Wanderful reciepe! Great combination of flavors, thanks.
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe with us. I did something similar for my family for Breakfast, it turned out very tasty, and most importantly nutritious.
I like your ideas. Thank you for being with us!

Do you have to use heavy cream for this recipe to turn out? Wondering if milk would work?
Hi Wanda, you can definitely use milk instead of heavy cream if you prefer.
Yeah, here we go its looking so delicious and i goona try this today.
Does this freeze well once baked and cooled?
Yes, I have frozen it and it heats up well. I frozen mine in individual portions so I could just microwave a small amount. If you freeze the whole pan you can thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours and then reheat at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes or until warmed through.
My 3 boys love this! We add syrup
Before the eggs or use syrup English muffins
This is one of the easiest and tasty egg bakes that we make. Nice twist with the English Muffins & everyone loved it!
Excellent recipe, used leftover spiral ham from Christmas dinner. Will definitely make this again
This is our new family favorite! I added chopped serrano and jalepeno peppers and chopped fresh spinach to the layers, and to the egg mixture I added onion powder, ground mango habanero, and ground hot mustard. I added 10 more mins to the uncovered cook time. D-e-licious! ❤️😘❤️ (I wanted to post a pic…..but I don’t see a place for that)
