How to Make a Holiday Charcuterie Board

There’s something magical about grazing boards during the holidays. Maybe it’s the variety, the colors, or just how everyone naturally gathers around them, nibbling and chatting. A few years ago, I started making themed boards for every major celebration, and when Christmas came around, I wanted to do something extra fun. Enter: the snowman brie.

It was a hit with both adults and kids. Everyone snapped photos before even grabbing a bite. It’s now a tradition in our home, and the best part? It’s totally customizable; you can use whatever you have on hand to build your own version!

A cheese wheel decorated as a snowman face with olive hair, carrot nose, and olive eyes and mouth is the centerpiece of this festive holiday charcuterie board, surrounded by crackers, pretzels, dried apricots, grapes, herbs, and meats.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start with a large board or platter. Wood, marble, or slate all work great, just make sure it has enough surface area.
  2. Place the brie snowman head first.
    • Lay your brie wheel near the top of the board.
    • Add a row of whole black olives on top to make the brim of a hat. Then lay the olives out in a rectangular shape on top of the brim to form the shape of a hat.
    • Place two black olive slices as eyes and slice a baby carrot in half and lay it flat side down as a nose.
    • At the bottom of the wheel of brie use slices of red bell pepper to form the shape of a scarf going around the base slightly as if tying the scarf around the neck and then taking a few more slice sand putting them down vertically to form the part of the scarf that is hanging down.
  3. Cut out cheese shapes.
Use small snowflake cookie cutters to create whimsical cheese cutouts. Place them around the board for a festive feel.
  4. Add meats and cheeses.
Fold or roll slices and fan them out in groups around the board. Alternate colors and textures for visual appeal.
  5. Fill in with fruits, nuts, and extras.
Tuck in grapes, nuts, and dried fruits around the edges and between the main components.
  6. Finish with crackers and garnish.
Place stacks of crackers and a few rosemary sprigs for that wintery, rustic vibe.

Tips for Your Holiday Charcuterie Board

  • Contrast is key. Mix soft and hard cheeses, sweet and salty items, crunchy and creamy textures.
  • Color matters. Reds, greens, whites, and golds scream holiday—use those colors intentionally.
  • Plan ahead. You can pre-cut cheeses and prep fruits the night before. Just assemble an hour or so before serving.
  • Let cheese breathe. Room temperature cheese has the best flavor, so pull it out 30 minutes early.

How to Serve Your Charcuterie

When it comes to serving your charcuterie board, a large wooden board, platter, or even a baking sheet works great—but don’t worry if you don’t have a traditional board! If you’re setting up on a countertop or kitchen island, just lay down a layer of plastic wrap and build your charcuterie spread right on top. It gives you plenty of space to get creative with your layout, and when the party’s over, cleanup is as easy as peeling off the wrap and tossing it. Simple, practical, and perfect for feeding a crowd!
