This Crock Pot Shredded Chicken recipe is one I use all the time. I find that prepping my meals for the week really helps me stay on track when it comes to what I’m putting in my mouth. I use shredded chicken in so many recipes like my Chicken Tortilla Casserole, and my Buffalo Chicken Cups, and this slow cooker shredded recipe means I can throw everything in my Crock Pot, set it and forget it!

Crock Pot Shredded Chicken is simple to make and you can scale the recipe up or down however you like. The only constraint is the size of your slow cooker! You start with chicken breasts (you can use chicken thighs if you prefer but I like chicken breasts better for shredding), add a mix of onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, and pour in some chicken broth. The amount of broth you use may vary based on the size of your slow cooker so just know you’ll want enough to just cover the chicken (it’s ok it a little of the top peaks out).

How Long Does it Take to Cook Shredded Chicken in a Crock Pot?

You can cook the chicken for 4 hours on high, or 8 hours on Low.

Can You Use Water Instead of Chicken Broth?

Yes! You can use water instead of chicken broth for your Crock Pot Shredded Chicken. You can also use chicken bullion mixed with water if you don’t have broth.

How to Shred Chicken:

When the chicken is cooked through and cool enough to handle place it in the bowl of a stand mixer. Using the bread hook turn on the mixer on medium and watch it shred your chicken. If you don’t have a dough hook attachment you can use the paddle attachment instead.

Can I freeze shredded chicken?

You can freeze shredded chicken. Portion the shredded chicken into serving sizes that make sense to you. I do individual servings and family servings. Place it in a resealable freezer bag, or a container that is freezer-safe, and freeze it for up to a month. When you are ready to use remove from container and heat in the microwave until warmed through. You can also defrost in the microwave and then finish cooking in a skillet on the stove top if you are adding addition spices.

What you will need to make Crock Pot Shredded Chicken:

  • Crock Pot or Slow Cooker – The bigger the better especially if you like to meal prep. I have a 8 qt. slow cooker and it holds 3-4 pounds of chicken breast with room to spare!
  • Meat Shredder – If you don’t want to use a mixer to shred your chicken these meat shredders work great.
