What is a Chicken Gyro Bowl?

A chicken gyro bowl is essentially a deconstructed version of the classic Greek gyro. Instead of wrapping the ingredients in pita bread, they’re served in a bowl for a lighter, more versatile option. It combines juicy, marinated chicken, crisp cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, olives, and crumbled feta, all topped with a flavorful tzatziki sauce. You can enjoy it over a bed of rice or greens for a healthy chicken gyro bowl that’s both filling and nutritious.

Ingredients for Chicken Gyro Bowl

To create the perfect Greek chicken gyro bowl, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Chicken: Grilled chicken is the star of this dish. You can also bake or pan-sear the chicken for equally delicious results.
  • Cucumber: Adds a refreshing crunch to every bite.
  • Tomatoes: Juicy cherry tomatoes or diced Roma tomatoes work wonderfully.
  • Red Onion: Thinly sliced for a hint of sharpness.
  • Olives: Kalamata olives bring authentic Greek flavor, but black or green olives are great substitutes.
  • Feta Cheese: Crumbled feta adds a tangy, creamy touch.
  • Tzatziki Sauce: The creamy dressing that ties everything together.

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Rice or Quinoa: For a more filling meal, serve the gyro bowl over a bed of rice or quinoa.
  • Roasted Red Peppers: For added sweetness and depth. You can even make your own roasted red peppers in the oven!
  • Greens: Add a handful of mixed greens or spinach for an extra nutrient boost.

How to Make a Greek Chicken Gyro Bowl

  1. Marinate the Chicken. In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken to the bowl and coat it thoroughly with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for deeper flavor.
  2. Cook the Chicken. After marinating, remove the chicken from the bag and wipe off the excess marinade. Cook the chicken using your preferred method (see below). Once cooked, let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing it into thin strips.
    • Grill: Heat a grill to medium-high and cook the chicken for 6–7 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
    • Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F and bake the chicken for about 20 minutes.
    • Pan-Sear: Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 15–20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  3. Assemble the Bowl. If you’re going with the option of using a base start with a base of rice, quinoa, or greens. Arrange cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, and olives on top. Add the sliced chicken and sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese. Drizzle generously with tzatziki sauce or serve it on the side.

Great Keto-Friendly Lunch or Dinner

A chicken gyro bowl can easily fit into a keto lifestyle by skipping carb-heavy bases like rice or quinoa and focusing on low-carb ingredients. With grilled chicken, fresh vegetables, our creamy keto tzatziki sauce, and feta cheese, it’s naturally high in protein and healthy fats. For an even more keto-friendly option, serve it over mixed greens or cauliflower rice!

How to Store a Chicken Gyro Bowl

Proper storage ensures your chicken gyro bowl stays fresh and ready to enjoy. Here’s how to store the components:

  • Chicken: Store cooked chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze the chicken for up to 3 months and thaw in the fridge before reheating.
  • Vegetables: Keep chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, and red onions in separate containers. This prevents the vegetables from becoming soggy. They can stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Tzatziki Sauce: Store tzatziki in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Stir well before serving.
  • Assembled Bowls: If you’ve already assembled the bowls, store them in meal prep containers with compartments to keep the ingredients separate. Add the tzatziki and feta just before serving for the best texture and flavor.
  • Rice or Quinoa: Cooked rice or quinoa can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days in a sealed container.

Reheating Tips

  • Reheat the chicken and rice separately in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through.
  • Keep the vegetables and tzatziki sauce cold for a refreshing contrast to the warm components.

With these tips, your Greek chicken gyro bowl will taste just as fresh and delicious when enjoyed later!
