Air fryer eggs, while not technically ‘boiled’, are cooked in the air fryer at a low temperature for a set amount of time, giving you a perfectly cooked “hard-boiled” eggs every time.

Boiling eggs is a bit of a science and, to be honest, I’ve never mastered it. Methods range from starting with a pot of cold water and letting the eggs come to a boil in the water to bringing a pot of water to a rolling boil and carefully dropping the eggs in and then letting them cook.

Either way you have to deal with a big pot of water, the risk of the pot boiling over onto your stove top, and the chance that your eggs will crack when dropped in or while they bounce around together while they boil. Sometimes they come out perfect and sometimes they get the green coloration on the outside the yolk hat indicates they are overcooked.

The Air fryer is so much easier to control the results. With this air fryer recipe you just have to preheat it, add the eggs, set your timer, and you’ll get perfect results every time.

Less fuss, less clean-up with no pots or pans, and totally delicious eggs no matter if you like them soft, medium, or hard boiled.

Can You Boil an Egg in the Air Fryer?

While not technically boiling as there is no water involved, you can most definitely cook eggs in the air fryer. No matter if you like them soft boiled, medium boiled, or hard boiled, all you have to do is set the temperature and timer and you will have perfect eggs in no time.

How to Hard Boil Eggs in Air Fryer

Step 1 – Preheat – Preheat air fryer to 300 degrees F.

Step 2 – Add eggs – Place the eggs in the air fryer basket and lock it into the air fryer.

Step 3 – Cook – Set timer for desired cook time and cook. For soft boil eggs, go for 8-9 minutes. For medium boiled eggs (aka jammy eggs), try 10-11 minutes. For hard boiled eggs, cook for 13-14 minutes.

Step 4 – Ice – When done carefully remove the eggs from the air fryer and place them in an ice bath for 3 minutes.

Step 5 – Peel – Remove from the ice bath bowl, peel, and serve.

These times are a guide for getting perfectly cooked eggs in the air fryer, but just like anything else in the kitchen it will take a little experimentation to find the exact time that works for your air fryer. Start with these times and test them out and then add or subtract time as needed to get your eggs just the way you want!

Temperature for Air Frying Eggs

For air fryer eggs, cook at 300 degrees F. We highly recommend preheating the air fryer for 3-5 minutes before placing the eggs in the basket and setting the timer to ensure that the eggs cook for the full time at the proper temperature.

How Long Does It Take to Air Fry an Egg?

This will depend on how you like your eggs.

soft boiled egg cut in half

Soft boil eggs: 8-9 minutes. This will give you a barely cooked egg white and a runny yolk.

medium boiled egg with fork

Medium boiled eggs: 10 -11 minutes. This will give you a set egg white and a partially set egg yolk. It won’t be runny but it will still be golden colored and spreadable consistency.

Hard boiled eggs: 13-14 minutes. This will give you fully cooked egg whites and yolk.

These times are a guide for getting perfectly cooked eggs in the air fryer, but just like anything else in the kitchen it will take a little experimentation to find the exact time that works for your air fryer. Start with these times and test them out and then add or subtract time as needed to get your eggs just the way you want!

How Many Eggs Can You Cook in an Air Fryer at One Time?

You can cook as many eggs as you can fit in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Do not stack eggs on top of each other.

Why Use an Ice Bath?

The hot eggs will continue to cook after they come out of air fryer. An ice bath stops the cooking process and also cools the eggs so you can begin peeling them. You can also run your eggs under cold water instead of putting them in an ice bath, but the ice water bath does give more consistent results.

If You Put a Raw Egg (in the shell) in an Air Fryer, Will It Explode Like It Does in a Microwave?

No, your egg will not explode in the air fryer oven like it might in a microwave unless you cook it at an extremely high temperature. Just follow the directions and everything will come out perfectly.

How to Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

There are so many different ways and so much advice out there on how to peel hard boiled eggs. Everyone has their favorite one.

My go-to method is to place the hard boiled egg in a cup or jar and shake it around so that it gets little cracks all over the egg. Then run it under cool water while you peel away the shell. Sometimes I see people say you have to use water in the cup/jar when you shake but I don’t and it works for me every time.

Note: If you are going for a runny soft-boiled egg don’t use the shake method. The whites aren’t as set so it will just crack the egg and the yolk will spill out.

How to Store Them

Unpeeled – The best way to store hard boiled eggs is to leave them in their shell. This helps prevent bacteria from growing on the edible part of the egg. Place the unpeeled eggs in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can store them this way for up to 1 week. It’s a great way to meal prep!

Peeled – If you have peeled your eggs, start by lining your airtight container with a paper towel. Place the eggs on the paper towel and seal the container before storing in the refrigerator. You can store them this way for 2-3 days.

Recipes That Use Hard Boiled Eggs

Air fryer hard boiled eggs are a great snack to have on hand. If kept in the shell, they will last about a week in the fridge so you can have them ready to add to any salad, whip up an egg salad sandwich, or just sprinkle some salt and pepper on them and have a protein filled breakfast!
