This Chicken Parmesan Bake is a classic comfort food recipe that has been turned into an easy weeknight dinner recipe that is great back to school dinner for families.
I think some of my favorite recipes are the ones that take a classic comfort foods and turn them into super simple dishes that have all of the flavors you love without all of the work. You know I like to keep things simple and this Chicken Parmesan Bake is going to make getting dinner on the table during the back-to-school rush so much easier!
Baked dishes like this are such a lifesaver during the school year. I can prep ingredients on the weekends and during the week I throw everything together, pop it in the oven for 30 minutes and dinner is served. Chicken Parmesan Bake is a family favorite. It’s just a few simple ingredients, tender breaded chicken breasts cut up into bite-sized pieces, delicious Barilla Tomato & Basil sauce, and lots of cheese, tossed together with Barilla Penne pasta and topped with a garlic crouton crust.
Since there are so few ingredients it’s all about making sure they are quality ingredients. Barilla Tomato & Basil sauce is made using high quality, non-GMO ingredients like vine-ripened tomatoes, aromatic herbs, and extra virgin olive oil. The flavor is so good and it contains no preservatives and is gluten free so you can feel good about serving it to your family. Barilla Penne pasta is also made with non-GMO ingredients. The pastas large diameter and ridges are made for a baked dish like this. The clings to it and fills it so every bite delivers all of that flavor. Both Barilla Penne and Barilla Tomato & Basil sauce are always in my pantry. Whenever I’m grocery shopping at Walmart I make sure to pick up one or two of each so I always have it on hand when I need to throw together a quick, easy, wholesome dinner.
To assemble the Chicken Parmesan Bake you chop up cooked chicken. I bake frozen breaded chicken breast for my casserole because when I think of chicken Parmesan I think of breaded chicken but if you want to lighten it up you could baked boneless, skinless chicken breasts, or if you really want to save time you could even buy a rotisserie chicken and shred it. While the chicken is cooking boil your pasta. You want the pasta to be just short of al dente because it is going to continue to cook in the oven. The box of Barilla Penne pasta said to cook for 11 minutes for al dente pasta so I stopped cooking it at 9 minutes. The water gets drained and the warm pasta goes into a large bowl along with the cooked chicken, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and a jar of Barilla Tomato & Basil sauce. Stir everything together to coat it with the sauce and then spread it in a greased casserole dish. Then you add a little more sauce on top and dot it with fresh mozzarella slices and place it in a 350 degrees F oven for 30 minutes.
About 10 minutes before the dish has finished baking you add a breadcrumb topping made from garlic crouton, Parmesan cheese, parsley, and butter and place it back int he oven to finish baking. By the time is has finished baking the whole house smells heavenly and the kids will be sitting at the table ready and waiting!

- 1/4 c Parmesan cheese
- 1 c Garlic Crouton , crushed
- 1 tbsp Parsley , diced
- 2 tbsp Butter , melted
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Cut up cooked chicken into bite-sized pieces.
Add penne pasta to boiling water and cook for about 9 minutes, until just short of al dente.
In a large bowl combine chicken, penne pasta, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and sauce (reserve about a cup of the sauce and set to side). Toss until ingredients are coated.
Pour mixture into a greased casserole dish.
Add remaining cup of sauce to the top of the casserole and then add thin slices of fresh mozzarella cheese.
Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes.
10 minutes before the casserole has finished baking add the breadcrumb topping and return the dish to the oven to finish baking.
After 30 minutes remove from the oven and enjoy!
In a small bowl combine crushed garlic croutons, Parmesan cheese, parsley, and melted butter. Toss until fully combined.
The chicken can be frozen chicken (fully cooked), rotisserie chicken (shredded), or chicken breast (fully cooked). It is up to you!
