Ingredients You’ll Need

This recipe is written for two servings but can easily double. Here’s what you’ll need to have on hand:

  • Frozen mango chunks – The frozen chunks help to make a great frozen consistency for the cocktail. If serving a regular margarita over rocks, you can use fresh or thawed mangoes. Pick up some extra mangos and make this easy Mango Pineapple Smoothie for breakfast the next day!
  • Mango juice – You’ll want to use a sweetened mango juice. This is used in place of a simple syrup to sweeten the drink. You should be able to find this at your local grocery store.
  • Ice cubes
  • Alcohols – For this recipe, we use both tequila and cointreau (or another orange liquor such as Triple Sec).
  • Limes – You’ll need both the juice and lime wedges for garnish.
  • Coarse salt – This is to line the rim. You can substitute with sugar around the rim if you prefer.

Instructions

To make this, here’s what you need to do.

Step 1 – Prepare the limes. First, cut the limes in half and juice two of them. Cut the remaining lime into slices and then cut each slice in half.

Step 2 – Rim the glasses. Run one slice of lime around the rim of your glasses to wet the surface. Next, place the salt on a flat plate and dip the rim of the glass into the salt until the rim is evenly covered.

Step 3 – Mix the drinks. Place the frozen mango, mango juice, lime juice, ice, and both alcohols into your blender and blend until smooth. This will take about 30 to 60 seconds, depending on the power of your blender.

Finally, divide the frozen cocktail between the two glasses, garnish with a slice of lime, and enjoy.

Optional – Serve on the rocks. If you prefer a mango margarita cocktail served over rocks, then use fresh or thawed mango pieces. Follow the same process as step three, mixing all the juices and mango in a blender and then pouring over ice placed in salted glasses.

Tips and Tricks for Serving Up the Perfect Frozen Mango Margarita

  • For a sweeter drink, add a teaspoon or two of honey or agave syrup to the blender before blending.
  • For a spicier twist, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few slices of fresh jalapeno to the blender. You can also use a mix of salt and chili or granulated sugar instead of plain salt.
  • For a non-alcoholic (virgin) version, simply substitute the alcohol with mango juice in the same ratio.
  • You can also use orange juice instead of mango juice.
  • If you want to make this a mango margarita served on the rocks rather than frozen, then use fresh mango instead of frozen or thaw the frozen mango before using. You then need to blend the mango, mango juice, tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice together in the blender until smooth. Prepare the glasses with the salt or sugar rims, add ice to the glasses, and then pour the mango margarita over ice before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best type of tequila to use in a frozen mango margarita?

The best type of tequila for a frozen mango margarita is a high-quality blanco or silver tequila, which has a clean, smooth flavor that won’t overpower the other ingredients.

Can I substitute triple sec for Cointreau?

Yes, triple sec is an orange liquor that tastes strongly of sweet oranges so it will still give you that orange flavor you’re looking for. Cointreau has a more balanced flavor with a slightly higher alcohol content and a smoother finish but it’s also slightly more expensive. If you’re able to use it you’ll get the best results.

What is the difference between a margarita and a frozen margarita?

The main difference between a margarita and a frozen margarita is their texture and serving style. A classic margarita is typically served on the rocks, which means it is shaken or stirred with ice and then poured into a salt-rimmed glass filled with ice cubes. It is a refreshing and tangy cocktail made with tequila, lime juice, and triple sec or orange liqueur.

On the other hand, a frozen margarita is blended with ice until it has a smooth and slushy texture. It is also commonly served in a salt-rimmed glass, and often garnished with a slice of lime or fresh fruit. Frozen margaritas can come in a variety of flavors, with popular options including strawberry, peach, and of course, mango.
While the ingredients in a margarita and a frozen margarita are generally the same, the texture and temperature of the drinks are what set them apart. Margaritas are perfect for sipping on a hot day, while frozen margaritas are a refreshing and fun way to cool down and enjoy a sweet treat.

Why does my frozen margarita separate?

If your frozen margarita is separating, it may be due to a variety of factors. Here are some possible reasons why your frozen margarita is not blending properly and separating:

Too much ice: If you have added too much ice to your frozen margarita, it can make the drink too thick and difficult to blend properly. This can cause the ingredients to separate and settle at the bottom of the glass.

Not enough liquid: If you do not have enough liquid in your frozen margarita, the ingredients may not blend together properly. This can cause the heavier ingredients, such as the tequila or fruit puree, to settle at the bottom of the glass.

Inadequate blending: If you have not blended the ingredients in your frozen margarita for long enough, it may not be fully mixed together. This can cause the ingredients to separate over time as they settle.

Temperature fluctuations: If your frozen margarita has been exposed to temperature fluctuations, such as being left out in the sun or moved from a warm to a cold environment, this can cause the ingredients to separate.

To prevent your frozen margarita from separating, make sure to follow a recipe with the correct ratios of ingredients, blend the drink thoroughly, and serve it immediately after blending. If you find that your frozen margarita is still separating, try adjusting the amount of ice or liquid in the recipe or using a different blender.

How much alcohol is in a mango margarita?

The amount of alcohol in a mango margarita depends on the recipe and how it is made. Generally, a classic mango margarita recipe includes about 2 ounces of tequila and 1 ounce of triple sec or orange liqueur per serving. This means that a single mango margarita typically contains around 0.6 fluid ounces of alcohol, or approximately 17.7 milliliters. However, the alcohol content may vary based on the type and proof of the tequila used, as well as the amount of other ingredients added to the drink. It is always important to drink responsibly and in moderation, regardless of the specific alcohol content of a mango margarita or any other cocktail.

How to Make it Ahead of Time

If you want to make frozen mango margaritas ahead of time for a party or gathering, there are a few tips to ensure that they turn out perfectly:

  1. Mix the ingredients: Start by blending all of the ingredients for the margarita together in a blender. This includes the tequila, lime juice, mango puree, and sweetener of your choice.
  2. Freeze the mixture: Pour the blended mixture into an airtight container and place it in the freezer. It is important to use an airtight container to prevent ice crystals from forming on the top of the mixture.
  3. Stir occasionally: Every 30 minutes or so, take the mixture out of the freezer and stir it vigorously with a fork. This will help to break up any ice crystals and ensure that the mixture freezes evenly.
  4. Serve and enjoy: After a few hours in the freezer, your frozen mango margarita should be ready to serve. Simply scoop the mixture into glasses and serve immediately with a slice of lime or a sprig of mint.

It is important to note that frozen mango margaritas can be stored in the freezer for up to a week before serving. However, the longer the mixture is frozen, the more likely it is to develop ice crystals and lose its smooth texture. To ensure that your frozen margaritas are a perfect consistency, it is best to serve them within a day or two of making them.
