Air Fryer Steak
Air fryer steak is an easy way to make a perfectly cooked, tender, juicy steak without firing up the grill or heating up a pan.
One of life’s greatest pleasures is a good steak.
In the warmer months, we love to grill and we’ve got great recipes for steak marinade and this amazing steak fajita pasta salad. But it is a little too chilly to grill in January up here in Maryland.
This winter I’ve discovered the joy of making my steak in the air fryer and OMG guys, I can’t believe how good it is!
It turns out perfectly with barely any prep and a short cook time. You’ll be making this on repeat and saving yourself the cost of a pricy meal out.

Ingredients You’ll Need
Great steak speaks for itself. You really don’t need much to season it before cooking it in your air fryer. Here’s what to get with your steak.
- Steak – For this recipe, I like to use two 12 ounce sirloins cut to about one inch thickness. You could also use ribeye steaks, New York strip, filet mignon, or any of your favorite cut of beef.
- Seasonings – I keep it simple with Worcestershire Sauce, Kosher salt, and crushed black pepper. You really don’t need anything else, the steak has a great natural flavor.
Instructions
Making these steaks is super easy. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1 – Prep the fryer and meat. To start, preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F for at least 5 minutes. As it heats, divide the worcestershire between the two pieces of meat. You’ll need to put a little on each side.
Next, sprinkle salt and pepper over both sides.
Step 2 – Cook. When the air fryer has finished preheating, add the prepared steaks to the basket. They can touch, but they shouldn’t be crowded together. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them separately.
Tip: If you cook them separately or are making more than two, you can tent a piece of foil over the cooked steaks and store them on a plate.
To start, cook for 5 minutes before flipping them. Once you flip them, cook them until they reach your desired level of doneness. You can use an instant read thermometer to take the guesswork out.
Before serving, allow the steak to rest for 5 minutes. Serve with your favorite sides and sauces for a complete and delicious meal.
How Long to Cook It
The air fryer cooks up steak in no time. These estimates are based on 1 inch thick steaks. The thicker the steak is, the longer it will take to cook. Here are the cook times based on how you like your steak:
- For rare – 6 to 7 minutes
- For medium rare – 7 to 9 minutes;
- For medium – 9 to 11 minutes;
- For medium-well – 11 to 13 minutes;
- To completely kill it – anything over 13 minutes (definitely not recommended!)
As it cooks, make sure you flip the steak halfway through. For reference purposes, here are the internal temperatures you can use to measure “doneness.” To make this super easy, I use this great instant read thermometer to get a quick reading of the internal temp.
- Rare: 125°F
- Medium-Rare: 135°F
- Medium: 145°F
- Medium Well: 155°F
- Well: 160°F
What Type of Steak is Best in the Air Fryer?
Any steak can be cooked in the air fryer from filet mignon to ribeye. I like a steak with a little more fat in it. The fat adds more flavor and juiciness to the meat!
Just remember, the thickness of the steak makes a difference in how long it takes to cook. Try not to get a steak that is thinner than 1 inch because it is harder to get that nice crust on the outside without overcooking it.
If it is over 1 inch thick, you’ll need to cook it longer. You can start by adding 2 minutes and then increase the time by one minute until it is done to your liking.
